    Tanning Oklahoma

Why are tanning places so popular in Oklahoma? They seemed relatively rare in the UK and CA. But here in Norman they are everywhere. Why?

Is it because Oklahoma doesn't have beaches? because most people here don't have pools? because the weather is too hot or cold? because so many people here avoid physical outdoor activities? is staying indoors during the day a requirement for OU sororities?

I don't understand. Why not just go outside more often? Oklahoma is (usually) a warm, sunny place.

That's always confused me, too. Tanning in VT is unheard-of, but that's because we're obsessed with being granola. I think it's a Southern thing related to the amount of make-up those types wear to class: the drive to be well turned out and all that sort of thing.

I think Joel has it right on.

In a tanning bed, you can be assured of no tan lines, which is not the case on the beach in America.

The tanning bed assures (mostly) an even tan, whereas being out of doors, where the farmer's tan is king, can assure that the tops of your feet and your nose will get dark (or burned).

Tanning beds are faster than the sun by providing the exact kind of light that causes melanin production in the skin. Ten minutes in the sun won't do much colour-wise. However, I've found that the sun produces a much browner tan than tanning beds do.

Tanning beds can be cooler than the sun by providing a wind tunnel to force air through to cool the skin while being heated by the bulbs.

Tanning culture is itself a subculture worthy of further exploration, Matt.

    Hope that helps.

Go for a spin in one of the beds, Matt, and see if you can get to the bottom of the mystery. Wear eye protection, though.

Vampires. That is all you need to know.

Thanks marcian. Now I understand why they're so easy to spot (i.e., why they look so fake)

I won't be going for a "spin in one of the beds" any time soon, probably never. I'm outside in the sun too much.
